Below are posters I designed for the Sikh Youth Camp that was recently held in Makindu, Kenya. The posters were targeted at youth on what their perceptions are in contrast to what Sikh really is so that they can become more aware of the life of a GurSikh.

Thanks for those beautiful posters. I put one on the bedroom door of my son. He has a sikhi tatto but no dastaar – so i chose your bicep muscle with the khanda and the narration – This may impress the girls but not the Guru!!! I hope the message will sink in deeper into his mind! Many thanks again. Keep up the great work. Although u may not realise but I am sure many Sikhs check your blog several times during the week and find it very useful and motivating as I do.
Some pictures of Makindo Gurdwara would be very welcome as I have not been there for over 7 years.

Honestly speaking, these are the type of advertisements I would see in school hallways to educate children on the negative effects on drug taking or smoking, though they are ‘correct’ in their analysis, I find these posters highly negative and this is not the way to carry on in Sikhi. This is not a military boot camp gentlemen, and neither is Sikhi a disciplinary tool. I’m not saying that these ‘issues’ should not be dabbed into, but this is not the way forward certainly not for a supposed sikh youth camp.

When I read about you, I found that I am sailing in the same boat. I am a software engineer working in software testing and automation domain in Tata Consultancy Services. My situation is same as yours. My mind is not into what I am doing…My mind is always into Sikhi, Sikhi, Sikhi…Like you, “I keep contemplating an escape and prayerfully beseeching Waheguru to take me away from here and place me in the midst of Panthic seva.”.
Perhaps our beloved Waheguru would bless us and shower us with seva of Khalsa Panth…I love my Khalsa, I love my Sikh family.

This is beatifully put. And crucially needed. And not just for the youth, but for all of us. I know many sikhs who shame our faith everyday – they find nothing wrong in ignoring who they are, thinking they honour our faith with tatoos, shaving their kesh and ditching dastars and yet call themselves sikh,.yet they chose to get into things like porn, lose their virginty before marriage, drinking, drugs, cheating on their wives/gfs/husbands/bfs, they ignore or abandon their culture, then go for those who will give them attention instead of faighting to improve what they don’t like. They wind up mixing with ppl who drink and smoke, etc. Additionally sometimes the people who give them attention also soemtimes work to shame them and our faith. For example, a hindu convert who has only what she concieves as knowledge of india and it’s cultures and relgions, thinking nothing of flirting with desis, then goes forth making comments in groups about making a new religion off Gguru Nanak Ji. We face so much falseness. And we need to do so much. And learn so much. Gur fateh. 🙂

Excellent stuff!
I live in London’s good ‘ol East End – Vaisakhi here is quite the celebration……it mainly involves cruisin in your (dad’s) BMW on Ilford Lane (which is Englands answer to Little India) with orange Khalsa flags hanging from the windows (the bigger the better). Oh and don’t forget to wear your bling with the Khanda ‘logo’ on it and the matching orange Khanda cap and vest (gota make sure everyone can see the Khanda tattoo). Not to worry about the rest, there’ll be plenty of booze!

A great work by you. We really need such posters to inspire the youth of today. Can you make some generalized posters not relating to the Gurmat Camp; posters which spread the real message of Guru. Such posters would be helpful in spreading the message of Sikhism and the importance of Dastaar to the youth.

Can you create some posters regarding drinking, smoking and sex before marriage (importance of remaing modest and virgin)? I notice a lot of girls who claim to be sikh actually go around whores these days totally giving the wrong impression of Sikh females. We need some posters to raise awareness that these things are not right.

Highly inspiring and motivational posters. There is a need to make concerted efforts to spread the message of Shri Guru anak Dev ji Maharaj – Internbational brotherhood, equality to all, dignity to all, service to the humanity, seva and simiran. The world today badly need teachings of the Great Guru, but firstly, we sikhs need to update our knowledge of sikhism, 90% people in the villages eben don’t know the names of all the 10 gurus. There is a need to make a plan, a strategy, an action plan to educate our sikhs rearding the universality of sikhism. Great thinkers have lauded, admired and praised the sikhim. I would like to quote one of the greatest philosophers, Mr Bertrand Russel. He was not an atheist, but he did not spare any religion of the world. He had condemned all the religions, but when he was asked about Sikhism, this great scholar spoke in great reverence and said that after the devastation of third world war, sikhism and SGGS will guide the survived humanity, One learned person asked him that you speak with such confidence, then wahy sikhsm and SGGS cannot stop third world war. He said, that SGGS and its teachings are capable of avoiding 3rd world war, but I cannot spare sikhs whose responsibility it was to spread the message of Guru Nanak to the entire humanity. There are similar such views by another great thinkers about sikhism, but we sikhs don’t know our religion and its relevance to its true nature. I feel I have to respectfully express that I was quite saddened to read these posters. I absolutely commend and appreciate your creativity and marketing skills here, but deeply feel that Guruji’s teachings WERE and ARE in fact about the Inside First.
Wearing a Khanda may not make you Sikh, neither a tatoo, BUT neither does simply taking Amrit, wearing a Kirpan or a Dastaar.
A ‘Sikh’ is a learner – true to oneself.
Guruji has said it over and over, one has to learn of oneself
“aap beechaaray so gi-aanee ho-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o. ”
One who contemplates his own self is truly wise. ||1||Pause|| pg. 152 SGGS Ji
Forgive me for my short comings in understanding, but as I have listened to Guruji speak, I feel they have said over and over that it IS within You.
Wearing a Dastaar is integral to the Sikh Khalsa. But Guruji has said,
“alhu gaib sagal ghat bheetar hirdai layho bichaaree.
hindoo turak duhoo-aN meh aykai kahai kabeer pukaaree. ||3||7||29||”
Allah is hidden in every heart; reflect upon this in your mind.
The One Lord is within both Hindu and Muslim; Kabeer proclaims this out loud.pg. 483 SGGS Ji
The same ‘God’ is within all of us, whether we wear a dastaar or not. You will not make a Sikh out of a person until they share This belief – this Teaching of Guruji. And it is This Teaching that allows for ANY Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Buddist, Jew – to potentially be a Sikh – believing in Ek Onkar in ALL.
You will not make a Sikh out of a person by simply placing a cloth on their head….that cloth has to become their life. A symbol of their responsibility, respect and duty to Humanity and their ‘Life’ and Head to the Guru, Ek Onkar.
I challenge you. In this day and age, where militarism is being sold in all countries – all using similar schemes. Telling you that you will only be good enough once you take a step into a certain group – I challenge you to live up to the teaching of our Gurus.
Create such posters that make one reflect on themselves – make one look for the LOVE inside them. Question their judgements, predjudices and commitment to ALL of humanity.
Start to instill the word of Guruji – through thought provoking questions. Use the Logic that our Gurus used.
Don’t try to Convince – you don’t need to Convince people when using the Shabadh Guru. Truth is unshakable and a Gift by the Grace of Guruji.
The Khalsa wasn’t Created from the Outside in – it was created from the INSIDE OUT.
Use your posters to speak to the Inside – don’t take the easy way out.
Even when batteling the armies, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji only ever fought with Compassion.
So speak from that place of love and compassion.

I think some of these posters are very good especially the tattoo one and the khanda chain one. Some are very ‘ in your face’ ” im not ready for amrit” if a sikh says that its not a excuse…. sikhi is not about force and intimidation. We find the true Guru from our own heart and at our own will. Drilling things into someones head does not make them become a sikh at heart. I can see the point of the posters as there are many so called ‘singhs’ and the message is innocent but it sounds like a recruitment agency for the army. I may not be a good sikh cos i have cut hair but to all the sikhs stay proud and teach ur children or brothers the true way of sikhi. wahe guru ji ka khalsa wahe guru ji ki fateh.

Amazing posters, but I do agree with some of the messages here. Try not to be too forceful or intimidating for that can very likely be a turn off to many Sikhs trying to learn. Still, I really do like all of the posters and it’s a great message you’re sending!!

I must disagree with the first two with the tattoo and the necklace. The Guru prescribed the turban so that it may be an outward sign of being a Sikh. Why not have more than one way of screaming to the world “I”M A SIKH!”? I can’t see a reason why not to do so.

I m very much impressed with ur posters… I being a sikh will defiently follow the rules made by our Gurus… Bt veer ji i thng i wannna say, i obseverd many ppl go to gurudwara sahab daily.n also do jaap n read gurbani..bt still de use harash language in gurudwara…they only cum for langar.. one incidnce is in my mind,dat wld nt be forgetable … there is one gurl her father in law is pure sikh externaly..means sikh with Gaatra,Turban..bt still he’s not faith ful with our guru.one day he trys to physicaly abuse his daughter in law… veer ji u tell is it rite to do ol dis…afetr listening ol dis…i find amrit beshak nah chakho par..gurua di aven besti nah karo….anyhow dats ol i wanna share with u.. talkin aba poster they are grt… hope u ll countinue makin these kinda stuff.

This is a great site I just ran into it accidently, and I love it. I was doing researh of Makindu Gurdewara and I found a gold mine. You are doing a great job, it is very imporatant to guide the Gur Sikh youth in the right direction, you are blessed and I know you will carry this project even further. I have a mixed feeling about about these posters.
They promote sikhi but at the same time i get the messege that they denounce individuality.
I do cut my hair(never been a sardar),drink on occasion, and eat meat, have tattoos, does this make me a bad person?
On the other hand I have done gatka for 6 years, performed at numerous nagar kirtans, I donate blood on occasion, donate money to local charities.
I am who i am, I have strong sikh faith at the same time I am my own individual and do what I like to do.
I believe that people who force their views of sikhi on others are no better than the people they impose their views on.

Dear veer ji first of all i would like to say how good your posters are, i’ve been to plenty of gurdwarey in leeds (U.K.) doing camps and classes for young children and your posters are been showed as an example and let me say it is having an effect… in a good way, forget all these negative comments above… because truly they dont kno the real world… take a walk in the park… how many “sikhs” dont know about there sikhi… our sher putter teenagers… girls, smoke, drink, club… sleep thats all they kno, our kuriah “what can i hide from my parents next im with such and such person but my parents wont accept it but he loves me and thats all that matters…” WAKE UP… u myt hear this a lot but how many of you can have a child and let them be tortured for the forcoming generation… would you let your little son and daughter be killed in front of your eyes… could you hear of your mother being taken away, could you hear of your father being beheaded…? YOU AS A PERSON would you leave everything behind for your guru… let me tell you Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee did… your true father is Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee… and our fathers done a lot for us… these posters, yes they are a slap on the face… but like your parents give advice in a harsh way for your own benifit so do these posters… dont reject your frends and family that dont kno anythin about sikhi and think that they are different coz you kno more tell them! teach them all you kno! bring them to the gurdwara instead of a drink in the pub… take some tym out of work for the guru hu made u who you are now… coz without him believe me, you can be nothin… please dont take this as this guy thinks he’s perfect im not… but i dont say im not perfect to carry on doin wrong like some peoples excuses… dont give up… work to keep us alive… coz khalsa will only raaj if we make the khalsa raaj, amrit is truly a big step but if everybody wudnt mind winning the lottery but amrits something far better than that… the person above me shud truly be ashamed of them selves for making a comment like that… in my oppinion… my brothers and sisters amrits the best thing you’ll EVER do in your life… and its not hard… its all within yourself the determination… the motivation if everythings there take that step and give something back to your father hu gave his life for you… if i offended anybody in anyway please forgive me but i have a lot on my chest im 19 and maybe im not as experienced as some but ive seen enough to say what i have said… but i spoke what was in my heart and what i feel is the truth… in the uk neway… take care and please have a think of what is REALLY going on and what we can REALLY do about it

WJKK WJKF veer ji thank you for these posters ive shown it to a lot of people who i think were doin wrong including my brother about the tattoo business and guess what he changed his mind! The comment above mine is completly right i agree fully… the body’s we are given arent ours its baba jee’s so if it belongs to him who are we to decide to change what isnt ours.. and about the lads and girls its sooo tru, boys are just lets jump in our flash cars and go check out the girls, and then girls do whateva they can do to keep up with fashion even if that means givin up sikhi… they find a lad which a majority of them wont stick to and still call themselves sikh, our mundey… i heard one of my friends say ” ye my sisters with so and so but its oryt we’re in the 21st century” like i heard it and was discusted i said the centurys might change but our history doesnt our ancestors, killed coz of not converting; 1984 etc… nowadays our kuriah and mundey convert willingly… its tru if somebody doesnt kno about sikhi educate them and tell them… this is what we’re all about… if a dish is empty… fill it… tell them, please… you can get bani translated if you dont understand everything read the translates too… i dont understand everything but when i got the translates i took in so much and believe me its soo deep… scientists worked out that there’s more planets than ours, but in gurbani its says dharti horr parrey horr horr… how did our guru’s already kno that… BELIEVE in our gurus they are tru… and the caste system lets us down a lot… if you stick your hand wide open in the air and count castes with your fingers, keep your hand open and with the same hand hit a wall there’s a good chance your fingers will break… NOW bring all your fingers together into a fist and punch that same wall and your hand will be stronger than what was your fingers… we need to be one… have you realised how when u say satsriakal to our people they reply in english… have you forgotten who you are…? im 14 People my age dont go gurdwara but i see muslim kids goin to the mosque 5 o clock on the dot… why dont sikh parents do that? busy with work i suppose? “awww bacha if you dont vant to go to temple stay home vatch tv” shameful what happened in our history the torture and we repay like that… lets face it majority of sikh people are corrupt… yes we live in the 21st century but dont forget where u’ve come from or what you are… thanks

I dislike the posters, although artistically much effort was put into them. You are saying that unless you take Amrit and keep the 5 ‘K’s, you are not Sikh. I strongly disagree. You will appear easily as ‘Sikh’ to others, but only you, the individual, can know in your own mind and heart if you are Sikh. I am a clean shaven Sikh, and I will never let arrogant Khalsa tell me I am anything other, or selectively interpret SGGS to define only Khalsa as Sikh.

We should prachaar of our religion. It is our birthright because we are sikh i have full right of prachaar in our country when some illegal anti social elements is interfering in our religion and breaking our religion but we should identify them. We should follow the posters but nobody should misused of these posters as such display above. We should stop that types of wrong prachaar. If a person is full sabat surat sardar he can make tatoo in his shoulders or arms. Because i have no serials or films that shows our religion or our culture khalis according to our family or community and one things understand that “UNITY IS STRENGTH” like Maharaj Ranjit Singh’s time.

thank you for this. i was seriously going to get a tattoo of this but each time i put it off and research information on the meaning. i am grateful i did because now i am NOT getting a tattoo after reading this and discovering it would offend people who are much more knowledgeable and practice this then me. this is further proof to me that there is a divine force and all that is required of me is to ask and listen and IT will be revealed
